Ian Murphy drawing workshop

During my A Level work I was given the opportunity to take part in a workshop with fine artist Ian Murphy. Ian bases his work around travels, experiences and viewpoints. His work is drawn from observation and very rarely works from secondary source unless working with colour. My work shown here has been produced using a similar working method to Ian. I have used layers of paper and tissue to add depth and texture which has been worked over with a simple yet effective technique of fine liner, water, graphite and paint.

MMU visit

This is a page from my sketchbook that shows a visit I went on to MMU. I was inspired by the variety and breadth of work within all of the disciplines on display at the degree show. I developed some of my own ideas from the work I had seen on display. This is an example of just some of the techniques I have pursued.

Still life drawings

This page displays some of my earlier work when Still life was my focus. I became intruiged by the theme close up and view points. I thought that the best way of doing this would be to focus on ‘still life’ as I could look at many different viewpoints, capture the different tones and show my skills in detail. The page shows my experimentation of pencil, photography and ink.

Watch edit

I have developed a cut and paste montage by repeating images to communicate an impression of movement and change. This is when I began to take influence from the graphic designer Ben Howarth as this work stood out to me when looking into cubism within graphic design.

Drawing from Photoshop watch edit

This work is a development from my Still life coursework and was influenced by cubism. This is a tonal piece which was produced as an observational study from one of my digital images which I created using photography and Photoshop. By using pencil I was able to create a strong contrast of depth, tone and light.

Watch page photoshop experimentation

This is a double page within my sketchbook that shows my development and experimentation of a simple watch photograph. My intention was to make the image more visually interesting and to represent change.

Watch on foam board

This watch edit was developed using Photoshop exploring ways of changing the watch to become more ambiguous as an image and to give a sense of movement. I built up the images using foam board to add depth and to give a more tactile surface.

Distorted watch

To explore the visual language of this edit I experimented with colour by using a photocopier to print out different tones. I enjoy using hard rendering as well as digital media to produce an image.

Graphite and chalk cubism drawing

This is an experimental A1 large scale piece that I developed from my original pencil study of the watch. I experimented with spray paints and I created a layered background to create depth. By increasing the size I was trying to develop an abstract composition.

Todd Barricklow scratch work

I focused on machinery and industrialisation to create observational studies using the technique of sgraffitio onto board. This was influenced by visual artist Todd Barricklow who creates dynamic negative and positive drawings.

Word background

I created this piece of work to make a background that relates to my art project. The themes were linked to change different viewpoints and close up. I began by taking all the words related to these categories and changing those using influences of typography. I used vibrant colours as I felt that this emphasises the words along with the shadow and background but also the different sizes of text that I have used.

Fragment photoshop edit

Investigating the use of ICT to create expressive lettering with abstract forms. These images will be used to create a flat pack sculpture that can be altered and changed by the viewer in numerous ways.

Tone Photoshop edits

This piece of work was created to see how I could edit text to make it stand out more from the multi tone background. This will also be used in the flat pack sculpture as it relates to change that I have focused on with my work. I have taken the idea for the multi tone background from images I have seen in other graphic design products.

Rankin- Destroy project

This project was based on the theme of Destroy and I found Rankin’s photography work a huge inspiration and it influenced these ideas. This work combines my own photograph with my interpretation of destroy.
On the first piece I worked in to my face with a variety of papers and techniques to develop a textured outcome. For the next piece I went with something that was more simplistic. I decided to expose areas of my work to reveal a background that was done by a graphic designer called ‘Obey’ who has influenced me by his use of Photoshop.

Rankin- Destroy project

This work represents my response to the theme Destroy and it was part of my AS course. I wanted my work to include images that portrayed me and my culture such as the Liver building, my art work and my portrait. I built my work in layers to add texture and depth. I also included flashes of colour which I feel made the work more appealing. Both images have different qualities which I like. One combines colour with dark textured layers whilst the other represents an old fashioned look with lighter brown tones and worn surfaces.

Creative Media Production - Page Layout and Design

For this project I had to create a magazine cover based on whatever I wanted, so I decided to go with a movie themed magazine as I thought It would be the best option as a lot of new movies had recently came out that I could talk about and promote. This project was when I began to use Photoshop properly and I then began to gain new skills with working on the software. The size of the magazine cover was A4 as it had to be put together at the end to see it as a final product compared to the professional magazines that are on the market.

Iron man 2 annual front cover

For this project I was asked to create an annual to represent my interests. My decision was to base my work around contemporary films. The end product is a representation of my journey on photo shop. The work was influenced by other existing products and my aim was always to ensure that my final outcome was both professional and a product that could easily be compared to existing annuals sold in todays market.

Simpsons Blu - ray sleeve

This Blu-ray cover was part of my Digital media course. We were asked to design Blu-ray sleeves that could be used to advertise a new movie. My decision was to create a Simpsons themed Blu-ray packaging. My aim was to ensure that the quality of my work could be easily compared to professional packaging in today’s market.

Graphic products Edexcel A level design and technology product design - Show stand designs

For this page I had to develop my design skills to produce a show stand that could be used to show a perspective client. The stand was designed for my end of year show. The work had strict success criteria and had to include an interactive section.
I considered a range of possible shapes that could be used. I also had to take in to account how the products would look on the display.

Graphic products Edexcel A level design and technology product design - Promotional designs

This work shows designs that I produced to advertise promotional materials that would accompany my show stand. I created a range of
logos and demonstrated how they could be implemented onto the products that will be advertised within my point of sails display. These designs are based on products that will be getting sold and given out during events.
